Coco's Road to Recovery

Coco was rescued by Cincinnati Animal CARE animal control officers responding to a call of a dog being thrown from a vehicle. She arrived at the shelter cold, unresponsive, and in poor body condition. She did not have any external wounds to suggest trauma but was extremely emaciated at just 2.4 pounds.

Coco was initially treated at the shelter for shock and then transported to an emergency veterinary clinic for overnight monitoring. The following morning, she was returned and hospitalized on-site. Upon evaluation, Cincinnati Animal CARE’s animal trauma team discovered she had a host of medical conditions ranging from dehydration and anemia, to liver and kidney disease and sepsis. Hypothermia and neurological conditions further gave a grim outlook to her prognosis. A feeding tube was placed to ensure she received adequate nutrition in a controlled manner and a whole blood transfusion given from a donor dog for her anemia. She began making small improvements each day and within six weeks more than doubled her body weight. She completely recovered to be a normal, happy dog and was adopted to a loving, caring home where she continues to thrive!

“Sheltering a Different Way” is the commitment of Cincinnati Animal CARE to the animals and people of Hamilton County. But being a no-kill, lifesaving resource center also takes the active support of our entire community. We can’t do it without you.

Lifesaving is a community ethic, and we know our community is passionate and ready to help. What can you do to ensure every animal in the county is treated as an individual and given the best chance at a live outcome?

  • To keep one dog per kennel for their safety and ours, open your home to foster an animal in need. It costs you nothing and truly saves lives.
  • To keep our animals happy and thriving, volunteer to assist with cleaning, feeding, walking dogs, and socializing cats.
  • To give our animals emergency and ongoing medical care, make a financial contribution.
  • To spread the word about the work we as a community are doing to help and rehome animals, follow and share our social media (@CincyAnimalCARE).

Coco is just one of the nearly 8,000 stray, surrendered, and neglected companion animals passing through the shelter’s doors each year. Together, we can ensure every animal is treated with dignity; receives individualized, lifesaving care; and given the best chance at a live outcome.

We ask that you share this message and our cause with your family, friends, and coworkers; and, if within your and their means, to donate. As Cincinnati and Hamilton County’s only open intake shelter, every dollar you give goes directly to the care and feeding of the homeless, sick, and injured animals in our community.

Thank you for making Cincinnati and Hamilton County a safe place for animals.
