On October 29th, one of our Animal Control Officers and Certified Humane Agents responded to a heartbreaking call: a tiny, trembling puppy found abandoned in a milk crate at the edge of the woods. He was rushed to our shelter, where our medical team immediately began working to save his life.
Bloodwork revealed that this little one was suffering from severe hypernatremia, meaning his sodium levels were dangerously high–a condition that can quickly become fatal. He was cold, skinny, dehydrated, and twitching uncontrollably.
Over the next week, our medical staff fought tirelessly around the clock to stabilize him. Calgary endured intensive hospitalization with a feeding tube and daily bloodwork. It was touch-and-go, but our incredible team refused to give up.
And then, after 13 days with around-the-clock care, Calgary miraculously began to fight back! With every wholesome meal and tiny step in his recovery, a spark slowly came to light inside this little guy.
Once he was stabilized and strong enough, Calgary headed home with one of our dedicated medical team members, Carrie, who continued his care as a medical foster. Yes–our staff literally take work home to save lives like Calgary’s; waking up through the night to monitor, feed, and comfort these fragile souls.
Through daily physical therapy using his wheelchair, and even a few rounds of water therapy, Calgary learned to walk again! And eventually–as he further gained strength and mobility, he has even regained the ability to run!
